About Us

"Cote's Peruvian rhythms on drums and cajon lent a distinctive other flavor to the music. Featuring songs from the quintets debut CD, Phisqa (Self Produced, 2013), Calmet's strong writing was as evident as the impressive individual musicianship. "

PHISQA: a new language in Jazz

"A Journey" is how Jose "Cote" Calmet describes PHISQA [pish-ka].

PHISQA meaning “five” in Quechua, a native Peruvian language, is not only a collaboration of five international jazz musicians, (Italy, USA, Peru, Venezuela and Ireland), but also a new way to merge the rich textures of Peruvian rhythms with the finesse and spontaneity of jazz.

Formed in Dublin, Ireland, in 2011, Phisqa avoids the traditional ways in which Peruvian rhythms have been merged with jazz.

Cote Calmet, composer, band leader and drummer explains:

“I tried to fuse Peruvian rhythms with jazz in a more organic way. I used a lot of the concepts of John Coltrane, opening up the solo sections and making way for dynamic interplay between the band members.

I have avoided having percussion instruments such as the cajon playing at the same time as the drums, and instead transposed the language of these instruments onto the drum set.”

Phisqa explores the richness of traditional Peruvian music with the tradition of jazz as a foundation for the various instruments: saxophone, guitar, drums, piano and double bass. That way Peruvian rhythms can be fused with the newest contemporary jazz and fusion.

Those who have been lucky enough to hear and see Phisqa say that it is "music that invites you to move or dance."

Phisqa is not only music that delights the ear, but is like a force that captures the imagination and carries listeners to territories they may have never explored before.

Phisqa's songs take us on a journey through the diverse landscapes of Peru and to listen to feel the birth of a new sound, a language rich in fresh and contemporary jazz.

About it, Cote Calmet explains:
Each song I write is like a poem, a story ... it always has a meaning that is born out of the depths of the heart. Many of these compositions I started writing three years ago. Phisqa is the evolution of everything I've learned at this time.

"Quality compositions and musicianship from PHISQA"

"PHISQA is one of the best sounds that I've heard in 2012! The beauty of peruvian music comes with a sophisticated personality and full of melodic and harmonic textures. It's interesting to see a work detach from the clichés of peruvian music and at the same time win over the land of jazz with so much class! Beautiful! Congratulations!"
